Summer Hair Care Tips

The temps have hit the 80’s and summertime is right around the corner! For our family, summer is all about being carefree and having as much pool & play time as we can handle. We literally live in the pool before school picks back up in the fall. If you saw my Instagram stories from yesterday, you might’ve caught the tail-end of my 7 year old swimming in our pool while my 2 year old was splashing in the shallow end. They’re all fishies and have seemed to jump in the moment the ice melted! The good news is their lips weren’t blue.

Along with this warm weather comes a whole host of problems that can wreck havoc on my locks. There’s a dramatic difference in my winter hair care routine from my summer hair routine. In between battling swimming pool chemicals and intense humidity, it’s so important to keep my hair healthy by changing a few simple habits. Next time you’re running errands, pick up these great summer hair hacks. Keep reading to find out a few tricks to beat the heat this summer!

  • DITCH EXCESS HEAT. Tis the season to skip the hair dryer and curling iron. There’s enough heat outside and the last thing my hair needs is a blow dryer and curling iron to fry it out. After a shower, I use a microfiber hair towel (few bucks!) and wrap my hair up to allow excess water to absorb while I finish with my morning skin care or make-up routine. After my hair has towel-dried for 15 minutes I’ll comb through using my favorite wet brush to gently remove tangles. Afterwards, I’ll spray all over with a leave-in conditioner or smoothing oil to tame frizzies. If I’m short on time, I let it air dry as long as I can and then blow dry to finish on a low-heat setting.
  • NATURAL HAIR PRODUCTS. What you put on your hair is as important as what you eat. That’s why I use Hair Food’s shampoo and conditioner. Hair Food is inspired by clean, simple, kitchen-crafted recipes full of ingredients you want to put in your hair and none of the things you don’t. No sulfates. No parabens. No dyes. No mineral oils. No compromises. If you’ve been following me for a while you know I’ve raved about their moisture collection. With the summer heat around the corner, I’m using their Hydration & Color Safe collection with Vanilla Bean & Jasmine. You can pick it up at Ulta! It’s shown to soften and smooth thirsty hair. As I ditch the heat appliances, this particular collection will help smooth hair without my blow dryer and curling iron! Again, it’s free of sulfate, parabens, and dyes so my hair is getting the best care this summer!
  • PROTECT YOUR COLOR. Yes, hair sunscreen is a real thing. Not only will UV rays damage your skin, it will penetrate and damage your hair. Years ago, I noticed the sun always faded my blond color SO quickly. It turns out the harmful UV rays damages and fades color. Protect your highlighted locks by keeping your hair covered when you’re out in the sunshine. Summer is the perfect time to accessorize with cute scarves and straw hats. Go for it, girl! Your hair color will love you for it. TIP: Your hair absorbs pool’s chlorine. To minimize the drying effects, rinse your hair with fresh water before taking a dip in the pool or ocean.

Go ahead, book that summer vacation since you’re prepared to keep your healthy-looking hair style! Have a tip to keep hair looking great during this frizzy-causing humid weather?! Leave it for me in the comments below. xo
